It is most unfortunate that there is no original guitar that exists from the Golden Era of the Baroque guitar in Spain for us to copy. Consequently, to reproduce this style of instrument we have to collect basic construction details from guitar-like instruments of the era that do survive and then adapt those elements to the basic forms that survive in the iconography of the time.
This reproduction of the Spanish guitar is an original design after a study of the iconography of Spain and Italy of the 17th century. It is representative of guitars seen in paintings and is comfortable and easy to play, with a very full tone.
Our version of the Spanish guitar has five double courses, (the first course is most commonly strung with a single string these days), with a figured maple back and sides and a mahogany neck and head. The front is a AAA Engelmann spruce that is at least twelve years old with a three layer wooden inset rose. The fingerboard and head plate are ebony along with ebony edge binding around the front. You have a choice of either ebony or boxwood for the pegs as well as an option for mechanical PegHeds, if you would like to use those. The strings that come standard on the instrument are synthetic, being made of nylon and fluorocarbon and there is an option for a set of gut strings.
