This three layer rose is based on the rosette in the English cittern now in the National Music Museum & Center for Study of the History of Musical Instruments, Vermillion, SD.

The rose is laser cut with a high-density lens so there is little or no burning on the edges and great detail. The original rose in the cittern, possible made by Petrus Rautta around 1600, is made of a carved wooden top layer with a parchment bottom layer. We have remodeled the design a little into a three layer rose with the top and middle layer of Cherry wood and a paper / parchment bottom layer. However, we are making this rose is available with the choice or wooden, parchment, or paper for each layer, so you can customize the rosette as you wish.

Please Note: because of the variability of wood color, the color of the wood layers on the rose that you receive may be a different shade than the wood pictured.

The wood layers give more strength to the rose and eliminate the tendency of the parchment to swell with humidity and protrude from the sound hole. The paper we use is a high quality, acid-free art paper that offers strength with little reaction to humidity.

The standard diameter is 2 5/8" (6.66cm), but you can specify a custom diameter and we will scale the rose to your specifications.

The layers are referred to as follows:

  • Layer 1 is the bottom layer
  • Layer 2 is the middle layer
  • Layer 3 is the top layer
