Description

The problem with bass wound strings is that they will eventually develop a buzzing sound when the core shrinks and the wire becomes loose. When this happens you can send the old string back to Gamut Music and we will stretch the core again and put new winding on it. This process can be done to a string at least three times before the core degrades and loses tone.

This service is available only for strings purchased from Gamut Music.

  • Academie contrabass nylon re-winding is available for the Lyon g-1 and d-2 strings; copper or silverplate wire re-winding is available for all metal-wound contrabass strings.
  • Red Diamond nylon re-winding is available for the g-1 and d-2 strings; copper wire re-winding is available for the A-3 and E-4 strings.

We do not recondition other brands of strings.

If you wish to have a Gamut bass string reconditioned, please check out in the store after choosing the shipping option you prefer and send your old string to:

Gamut Music, Inc.
1600 London Road
Duluth, MN 55812

Please be sure to indicate what type of string is being sent in for reconditioning (e.g. Contrabass E-4 Gut/Copper), and when you will be sending it to the workshop. It takes three or four days to process the string once we receive it in the workshop.

#

Hand-made in the USA by Gamut Music, Inc., a leader in the revival of early music strings and instruments. Gut strings are not intended to be used with fine tuners or string adjusters, and those devices should be removed before installing the gut string on the instrument.

All Gamut Academie strings (pure gut and gut/metal-wound) are made with beef serosa unless they specifically say "Sheep Gut." All pure gut Tricolore violin and viola strings are made with sheep gut; gut/metal-wound Tricolore and all Red Diamond strings are made with beef serosa.

Gamut gut string gauges are approximate (≈) diameter. Meaning, that while a ≈0.60mm string is polished in the workshop to a diameter of 0.60mm, changes in ambient humidity, temperature, shipping, and storage conditions can cause to string to expand or contract slightly.

Gimped gut strings and custom gauged equal tension strings are gauged with the equivalent-gauge (=) system. This means that the gauge listed, such as =1.50mm, indicates that the string is approximately equal in weight to a plain gut string of that diameter. Of course, because the wire is much heavier than gut, the string will be much thinner than a plain gut string.

More information about Gamut gut strings, string types, gauges, and string tensions can be found on our FAQ/Articles page. Not finding an answer to your question? Please contact us directly: support@gamutmusic.com.

    Killer Copper Rewind!

The winding on my Light + Copper A string broke down near the end of the fingerboard. I sent it in for a rewind and BLAM it came back rewound and sounding great. I'll be back when the wind on the E string gives up. All Hail The Gamut!

    My first Re-Wind

It's a great service and I'm really happy with the strings. Only one thing was a bit of an unfortunate mystery. When I ordered on line there was some place to write an extra note and I remember asking if I could get them rewound in silver instead of the copper that they originally came with. There was no other place to formally request this and in hindsight I could have written a note to go with the strings when I shipped them. But in the end they came back to me with copper again. They are great strings but I was hoping to experience the silver this time. So, I have a little regret for not being more vigilant. -- [Note from Gamut: Due to Jesse's suggestion, we have added the wire option to the bass string rewind, you can now choose copper or silverplate wire, as well as nylon winding.]
