This is a single-length (48", 120cm) treble gut string made with beef serosa available with either a natural or varnish finish. This gut string is available only in the natural color which varies from white to a pale straw hue.

Gamut beef gut strings are available in diameters of .38mm to .80mm and are considered special-use strings for instruments that require a stronger gut.

Plain gut strings are available with a natural or varnish finish. Natural strings are hand-rubbed with a light oil. Varnished strings have three coats of finish before being hand polished with the oil. There is an additional charge for varnished strings. The string comes with plain, unknotted ends. Knots may be tied for you, and leather washers added for an additional charge.

Instructions on how to tie a string knot are on the back of each package.

Beef serosa has a higher tensile strength than does sheep gut, so this string is useful for instruments that require extra durability. If your instrument has a longer string length which puts it beyond the comfortable range for sheep gut strings, the beef gut would be a good choice for string selection as it will stand the strain a little better. Treble gut is processed to be a little harder than other kinds of gut, and it also has a lower twist of about 15 degrees to increase the strength.

Academie strings are manufactured in the USA by Gamut Music, Inc., a leader in the revival of early music strings and instruments. Gut strings are not intended to be used with fine tuners or string adjusters and those devices should be removed before installing the gut string on the instrument.

    Gamut gut strings

Ordered this one to replace one I took from my inventory of spare strings. The 'old' string had been in the wings for almost 5 years, in its bag which was stored in a temperature- and humidity-controlled environment. I installed the 'old' string on my instrument, and it sounds terrific. I anticipate that if this new string waits 5 years eventually to be used, it will also be in fine shape. I've always had excellent luck with strings from this maker.

    Best D string possible

Just wanted to say that the D string (along with the other Gamut strings I use) is an incredible string. I'm not only impressed with the sound quality, which is fantastic, but also the durability. I am getting almost 50% longer life with this Gamut string than with other brands.
