We have bundled together the most popular kinds of bass viol strings and offer them in a standard set for ease of ordering. The set consists of:

  • d-1 Treble gut
  • a-2 Treble gut
  • e-3 Lyon gut
  • C-4 Pistoy gut
  • G-5 Gut/silverplate-wound
  • D-6 Gut/silverplate-wound
  • A-7 Gut/silverplate-wound

Plain gut strings are available with a natural or varnish finish. Natural strings are hand-rubbed with a light oil. Varnished strings have three coats of finish before being hand polished with the oil. There is an additional charge for varnished strings. The string comes with plain, unknotted ends. Knots may be tied for you, and leather washers added for an additional charge.

Instructions on how to tie a string knot are on the back of each package.

Academie strings are manufactured in the USA by Gamut Music, Inc., a leader in the revival of early music strings and instruments. Gut strings are not intended to be used with fine tuners or string adjusters and those devices should be removed before installing the gut string on the instrument.

    Fabulous sound

    I love these strings. The only reason I didn't give them five stars is because I haven't used all the other types of strings for comparison. When I play on them, my instrument sounds much better than my level of skill merits.

    Set Bass Viol 7 strings

    I ordered these strings for my dear friend Daniel Guzman who lives in Mexico City. Daniel, also an excellent luthier always asks for the best quality strings for his instruments and Gamut Music is always his choice.
