The vihuela is a plucked string instrument from the Renaissance period, primarily popular in Spain and Portugal during the 15th and 16th centuries. Resembling a small guitar, it typically has six or sometimes five double strings. The vihuela's body is usually rounded or pear-shaped, and it is played by plucking the strings with the fingers or a plectrum. It was commonly used for both solo and ensemble performances, often in conjunction with voices or other instruments. With its rich, resonant sound and versatile playing techniques, the vihuela played a significant role in the development of early Western music and remains an important instrument in the study and performance of Renaissance repertoire.
The double-strung vihuela string set consists of:
- g-1 - Treble Gut x2
- d-2 - Treble Gut x2
- a-3 - Treble Gut x2
