This is a set of strings for the Baroque violoncello. We have bundled together the most popular kinds of strings for convenience in ordering. The set consists of:

  • a-1 - Lyon gut single-length
  • d-2 - Pistoy gut single-length
  • G-3 - Silver-wound gut single-length
  • C-4 - Silver-wound gut single-length

Plain gut strings are available with a natural or varnish finish. Natural strings are hand-rubbed with a light oil. Varnished strings have three coats of finish before being hand polished with the oil. There is an additional charge for varnished strings. The set comes with plain ends, but the a-1 and d-2 may be tied for you, and leather washers added for an additional charge.

Instructions on how to tie a string knot are on the back of each package.

Academie strings are manufactured in the USA by Gamut Music, Inc., a leader in the revival of early music strings and instruments. Gut strings are not intended to be used with fine tuners or string adjusters and those devices should be removed before installing the gut string on the instrument.

More information about Gamut gut strings, string types, gauges, and string tensions can be found on our articles page. Not finding an answer to your question? Please contact us directly: support@gamutmusic.com.

    Academie strings, cello set

The strings are very responsive and excllent overall. They take some time to "break in," but they are wonderful. I strongly recommend them. I use the light plus version.

    cello set

This is my first time using gut on my instrument and I just started playing them today so it will take some time for them to stretch out but already they are sounding amazing. My luthier who helped me set them up says they look and sound to be very fine quality.
