Extra Heavy or Extra Light Gauges?

TL:DR: Most Gamut Academie strings are offered in gauges Light, Light+, Medium, Medium+, Heavy, and Heavy+. We include string diameters on every string page, and you can use our String Calculators to find the correct strings for your instrument. We also offer instrument-specific String Tension Tables for your reference.

Gamut strings are hand-crafted using selected gauges based on Dan Larson's calculations for each instrument. If your preference for a particular string runs lighter or heavier, our Custom Gauged Strings section of the store offers string types in a wide range of gauges.

For example, our Academie Violin a-2 Gut string is a treble gut string available in standard gauges of .72mm, .74mm, .76mm, .78mm, .80mm, and .82mm; while our Custom Gauged Treble Gut Strings section offers gauges from .38mm to .98mm.

Our string sets are based off the combined price of individual strings, so there is no penalty for purchasing strings à la carte.
